| Thallus thin to thick, verrucose to verruculose or subsquamulose, yellowish white to yellowish grey, epruinose. Soredia absent. Prothallus not visible. Apothecia immersed when immature, becoming sessile, 0.4–1.0 mm diam.; disc pale to dark red-brown, epruinose; margin concolorous with the thallus, thin, entire, ±verrucose to crenulate. Cortex hyaline, ±gelatinous, inspersed with small crystals, 15–20 µm thick laterally and 20–25 µm thick basally. Amphithecium with large crystals insoluble in KOH (pulicaris-type). Parathecium hyaline, without crystals, 10–15 µm thick. Epihymenium red-brown, c. 10–12 µm thick, K–, without crystals (glabrata-type). Hymenium, subhymenium and hypothecium hyaline. Paraphyses sparingly branched and slightly thickened apically. Ascospores ellipsoidal, 9.5–13.0 × 5.5–7.5 µm. CHEMISTRY: Thallus and apothecial margin K+ yellow, C–, Pd+ pale orange; containing atranorin (major), planaic acid (major), chloroatranorin (minor), hyperplanaic acid (minor), isohyperplanaic acid (minor) and superplanaic acid (minor). |  |
